The documentary 49,172 delivers the dramatic escape of Bulgarian Jews and the post-war rescue of their Jewish compatriots. A powerful exploration of persecution and salvation comes to life through the Holocaust survivors themselves, honouring the rescuers of Bulgaria's Jewish community, and paying tribute to their heroic acts of bravery in defying the overwhelming sway of Nazi rule.
The film tells the gripping story of the 49 172 Jews in Bulgaria who escaped the biggest atrocities of World War II and provides a dramatic post-war account of those who rescued their Jewish compatriots.
The team made of mostly Bulgarian filmmakers who live in the US was given access to unique and never showed before archives, including the archives of the Steven Spielberg’s “Shoa” foundation, The Yad Vashem Holocaust Remembrance Center and private archives from USA, Israel and Bulgaria.
The screening will be accompanied by short speeches by the Bulgarian Ambassador to Denmark H.E. Mr. Svetlan Stoev, the Director of the Danish Jewish Museum Mr. Janus Møller Jensen and the Danish historian and journalist Mr. Simon Kratholm Ankjærgaard, followed by a short Q&A session.
A glass of wine will be served afterwards.
