The escape of the Jews in October 1943
12. October 2023
Lectures
October 12 from 13-15 p.m. associate professor emeritus Therkel Stræde gives a lecture at Hillerød Library about the Jews' flight from Denmark in October 1943
This year marks 80 years since the action against the Danish Jews was initiated by the German occupying power in Denmark during the Second World War. In the first years of the occupation, the cooperation policy had prevented the Danish Jews from being deported to the Nazi extermination camps, where more than 6 million Jews were murdered during the Holocaust. The collapse of co-operation with the political party in August 1943 resulted in the protection of the Danish Jews disappearing, but through a great common popular effort it succeeded
the vast majority of Jews in Denmark to flee to Sweden. Almost 7000 Jews were rescued across the Øresund to neutral Sweden, but 470 Jews were apprehended and deported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp.
Lecturer emeritus Therkel Stræde, who has dealt with the occupation and the Holocaust for more than 30 years, will draw the broad lines of history for this exciting lecture, but also zoom in on the personal destinies.
During the lecture, archive manager Simon Schultz van Engleland will provide local historical input. Among other things, about how Hillerød Railway Station was a crucial transit point for many of the Jews going north towards Gilleleje.
