The friendship between Chief Rabbi Max Friediger and Bishop Fuglsang-Damgaard
15. October 2023
Lectures
Both before, during and after his imprisonment in Theresienstadt, Max Friediger had lively contact with circles in the folk church led by Bishop Fuglsang-Damgaard. In the lecture, professor emeritus Martin Schwarz Lausten identifies the background and significance of this connection in more detail.
The close contact and not least the friendship that arose between the chief rabbi and the bishop was to prove to be of great importance to the Jewish congregation and to the deportees to Theresienstadt.
Bishop Fuglsang-Damgaard's pastoral letter from 29 September 1943, with a courageous call to distance himself from the persecution of the Jews, became a landmark event for the Danish population, when the Danish priests communicated this in churches all over the country during the services on 3 October 1943.
During Max Friediger's captivity in Theresienstadt, the contact and the bishop's tireless support continued, e.g. with help packages.
The friendship between the rabbi and the bishop was not only important during World War II, but continued after and has also been decisive for the future good relationship on the part of the People's Church towards Judaism in Denmark.
