The Jews' flight from Aarhus
4. October 2023
Lectures
Hear about independent Jewish women in Aarhus over the past 200 years. We have managed to uncover completely new stories about strong personalities who took new paths in the fight for freedom.
With a particular focus on Aarhusian women with a Jewish background, the Occupation Museum and Aarhus City Archives tell the story of selected citizens over the past 200 years.
We start with accounts from the 1800th century, where archivist Mia Gulvad Jørgensen, among other things, paints a picture of the successful merchant family Rée and their importance for Jewish life in the city.
Then we move forward to World War II. During the Nazi occupation of Denmark, at least 2 people with a Jewish background lived in Aarhus. In October '60, the Gestapo attacked all Danish Jews and the vast majority fled to Sweden. In the lecture, MSc Klaus Bertelsen tells, among other things, stories about a ballet dancer from Berlin, a divorced seamstress with a small child and a doctor who went underground in Risskov.
The marking of the 80th anniversary of the flight of the Jews is organized in collaboration with KØN - Gender Museum Denmark and takes place in their premises, Domkirke Plads 5, 8000 Aarhus C.
